For Frieze New York 2020, Kavi Gupta welcomes you to an online presentation of extraordinary artworks from Jeffrey Gibson, Deborah Kass, Mary Sibande, Richard Hunt, José Lerma, Inka Essenhigh, Clare Rojas, Michael Joo, Young-Il Ahn, Jessica Stockholder, Beverly Fishman, Alfred Conteh, Willie Cole, AFRICOBRA co-founders Gerald Williams and Wadsworth Jarrell, and the Estate of Roger Brown.
Current events compel us to spotlight artists and works that help bring our intentions into focus. Deborah Kass’ neon installation EVERYBODY (2019) is an optimistic statement of collective intentions, while the message of Kass’ Just a Shot Away (2015) takes on an uncanny urgency in the current age. Inka Essenhigh’s New Jersey 2600 C.E. (2019) and Living room 2600 C.E. (2019) offer scientifically and ecologically hopeful glances forward in time. Alfred Conteh’s Quan’ta II (2019) mobilizes material realities like corrosion and rust to remind us of those left behind by America’s promise, asking what we can do to help make their future secure. Works by Beverly Fishman and Michael Joo scratch the surface of the multitudinous concerns predating our current dilemma, such as pharmaceutical addiction, and humanity’s contentious relationship with science and nature. Paintings from Young-Il Ahn’s Water Series acknowledge the immensity of solitude while drawing us towards distant, but clear horizons. Mary Sibande’s Ascension of the Purple Figure (2016) presents a confident image of egalitarian progress. And a historic, untitled Richard Hunt sculpture sets forth a harmonious and elegant vision of natural balance.Experience these works and more May 8 – 15 in our Frieze New York 2020 online viewing room.
