One wall of the Warfield building on 982 Market Street, is undergoing a mural by Clare Rojas. According to the San Francisco Arts Commission’s Facebook page, the mural was funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and “brought to life by the Luggage Store Gallery.” She has just gotten started but it promises to be “monumental,” according to the gallery.
The Luggage Store in San Francisco is also known for sponsoring artists that are considered to be part of the Mission School.
[Clare Rojas] is often placed within the context of what is considered the most definable art movement to emerge out of the Bay Area in the late twentieth century: the “San Francisco Mission School.” This core group of artists, including Barry McGee, Margaret Kilgallen, Alicia McCarthy, and Chris Johanson, was made known through exhibitions at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and the Luggage Store in San Francisco […] As per The Believer Magazine.
However, the Mission School is not just about graffiti and cartoon art but also folk art –an evident characteristic in some of Rojas’ work. She has also been known to go more abstract.
