ANGEL OTERO — KYLE MACMILLAN

Kyle MacMillan, Art In America, June 18, 2015

In this show of recent works, Gates of Horn and Ivory, Puerto Rican-born artist Angel Otero has fused porcelain and steel into high-fired sculptures recalling fragmented wrought-iron gates or elaborate cages that have been rescued from a burnt-out building. Some of the sculptures resemble stacked crates, perhaps in a wry comment on Minimalist works like those of LeWitt or Judd. Gracefully corresponding with the sculptures, a new series of richly textured, near-monochrome abstract paintings are comparably dense.
