BEVERLY FISHMAN’S ELECTRIFYING NEW MURAL IN DETROIT

Juxtapoze Magazine, May 22, 2018

Beverly Fishman recently unveiled this 170 foot x 60 foot mural in downtown Detroit. The mural adorns the side of the Detroit City Club Apartments, and was commissioned by their owner Jonathan Holtzman in association with the Library Street Collective. Fishman designed the piece, titled Rise, to counterpoint the building’s horizontal balconies, and the composition aims to reflect the pulse of Detroit’s vibrant electronic music scene. Like many working in street art, the use of vibrant colors draws upon a change in the way people perceive color, due to rapid technological advancement. In Fishman’s own words: “Every decade, the world of colors in which we live evolves as new lighting systems develop and others go out of fashion… I wanted the mural to reflect the development of new types of lighting and how the visible surfaces of the city are constantly evolving.” Peep the new mural below.
