Glenn Kaino American, b. 1972
Glenn Kaino (born 1972) is an American conceptual artist based in Los Angeles. By integrating innovative methodologies with established art historical traditions, Kaino orchestrates spectacular aesthetic phenomena that engage with, and offer critical commentary on the collective contemporary consciousness.
Kaino’s oeuvre is omnidisciplinary. It predominantly includes sculpture, painting, filmmaking, performance, installation, and large scale public work. But since his practice is fundamentally idea based, Kaino is committed to engaging any techniques, processes, materials, tools, technologies, environments or collaborators necessary to manifest the concept at hand.
As an art student in the 1990s at UC Irvine and UC San Diego, Kaino adopted a layered, philosophical approach to art making, founded on the primacy of ideas. Simultaneously, he also immersed him self in the study of computers and digital technology. His dual, high-level grasp of creativity and technology have brought Kaino into the orbit of influential figures within the broader culture and resulted in multiple noteworthy professional opportunities within the internet, entertainment and communications industries.
His extraordinary life experiences have endowed Kaino with a deep understanding of the importance of effective, cross-platform storytelling, especially as it relates to the construction of new myths. He possesses unique insight into both the value and the dangers of our age—the Information Age, an era defined by multitasking, data analyses, systems and networks, and obsessive connectivity. Drawing on his critical assessment of this fascinating, yet often troubling, phase in human development, he has developed an aesthetic vision that places him on the vanguard of a new age: an alternative, emergent present—the Imagination Age, when creativity supersedes technology as the driver of human experience
Major solo exhibitions of Kaino’s work have been presented at the High Museum of Art; the San Jose Museum of Art; Contemporary Art Center Cincinnati; the Studio Museum in Harlem; the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego; the Andy Warhol Museum; the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth; Artpace San Antonio, and REDCAT, Los Angeles. Kaino’s work has been featured in Desert X, the 13th International Cairo Biennale, the 12th Biennale de Lyon, Performa (2009), the 2004 California Biennial at the Orange County Museum of Art, the 2004 Whitney Biennial, and Prospect.3, New Orleans. Kaino’s work is included in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Orange County Museum of Art, the Hammer Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego.
Kaino is also an Emmy and Webby Award-winning producer and documentarian, whose films have been featured at the Tribeca Film Festival and SXSW.

Glenn Kaino, With Arms Drawn: Glenn Kaino and Tommie Smith
San Jose Museum of Art | San Jose, CA 1 Nov 2019 - 5 Apr 2020In 1968, at the Summer Olympic Games in Mexico City, San José State University runner Tommie Smith raised a gloved fist during the medal ceremony to protest human rights abuses around the world, and to bring international attention to the struggle for civil rights in the United States. This act of protest, which still reverberates today, is explored in a series of collaborations between Smith and Los Angeles–based conceptual artist Glenn Kaino. The exhibition includes monumental sculpture, print-based projects, and memorabilia from Smith’s personal collection that reflect his time as an athlete and civil rights activist.Read more -

High Museum of Art | Atalanta, GA 29 Sep 2018 - 13 Feb 2019A half century before NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick took a knee, gold medal sprinter Tommie Smith raised a fist at the 1968 Summer Olympic Games in Mexico to protest abuse of human rights around the world and in response to the struggle for civil rights in the United States. His historic gesture, and its reverberations over the past 50 years, are explored in this important exhibition organized by the High Museum of Art.Read more -

Glenn Kaino, Tank
Grand Arts | Kansas City, MO 15 Apr - 6 Jun 2015Produced in conjunction with Grand Arts Kansas City, Tank consists of a series of aquariums populated by multi-colored coral, each species vying for superiority over the other. The title of this work is multivalent, referring simultaneously to the aquariums, and to the translucent resin-cast fragments of a decommissioned M-60 Patton military tank that construct the architecture within each of these. The cast resin pieces allude to the practice of sinking decommissioned tanks and other military apparatus in order to construct artificial coral reefs, thus rendering these tools of destruction into life-sustaining habitats. The vibrant colors that the viewers encounter in these tanks are not, however, entirely peaceful; as the polyps grow, they encroach on each other’s boundaries, thereby creating new visual demarcations of color and density while simultaneously exposing a slow motion war for survival. Tools of large-scale displacement are reclaimed by much smaller organisms only to become a microcosmic reflection of the colonialism they once facilitated.Read more -

GLENN KAINO – DESERT X
February 23, 2017Hollow Earth is a sculpture made from glass and wood that creates the illusion of a tunnel descending deep into the Earth, housed in an abandoned shed. Once inside the darkened space, audience members become uneasy as they peer down a brightly lit and very deep-looking hole that drops into infinite darkness. Kaino’s work is a contemplative gesture that explores the complicated and diverse history of tunnel making, from the secret tunnels between Egypt and the Gaza Strip to the common childhood (and Orientalist) fantasy of digging a hole through the planet and ending up in China. The title, invoking the numerous legends of a subterranean land, provokes the idea that the world is inside out – an overt reference to the crisis of our time. Paradoxically, as the viewer stares down at the piece, wondering about the depth of the tunnel, they are actually staring at themselves as seen through a series of mirrors. In this ironic case, art directly reflects (their) life and the meaning, value and power that they assign to it.Read more
